Samll Astrolabe (ca. 1500 A.D.), origin probably Germany. All elements of the astrolabe are identified.


The backside is used to determine the height of the sun above the horizon in degrees and to measure the height of a building or a an elevated point in the countryside. With the calendar, the astrological date for the date ring of the ecliptic can be determined.

Reduced reconstruction. Diameter 100 mm (3.94"), weight 230 gr (8.1 oz.), brass (untreated). The drawing is not engraved but etched.
