— Tools: Iso2Grey — Isohypses to Greyscale Bryce 4 to 7 as well as TerraGen offer tools to create random terrains. Bryce also permitts to draw a terrain in the editor. However, the editor tools are not particularly well suited to create a terrain at will. With both programs it is possible to import parts of real terrains as DEM or PGM. Unfortunately, most of the time Digital Elevation Maps or Portable Greyscale Maps of the desired countryside are not available in the required resolution and at a decent price. The alternative is to copy the isohypses from an accurate map (Ordnance Survey), which can be purchased at a modest price. Isohypses are the lines of equal elevation. Scan the desired part of the map. Open your favorite graphics program and follow the lines with a unique color, that cannot be found on the scan. Then copy the lines to a new image. ![]() Next, fill in the spaces between the lines with a grey shade. Dark is low country, bright high altitude. When you are finished with that, remove the lines by giving each line the grey shade of the region it surrounds. The result will be a terraced countryside. This may be an interessting effect, but it is not desired. Iso2Grey – Program Minimal Requirements Installation Download Iso2Grey Documentation.
